Two Timely Renditions of “How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806 – 1861)
THE PATRIOT VERSION:
America! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways!
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when arming out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle light.
I love thee freely, as Trump strives for right!
I love thee purely, as dedicated men deserve praise!
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my Patriot briefs and with my grandparent’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost civics books. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better, America, after death.
THE OBAMA VERSION:
America! How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways!
I hate thee to the depth and breadth and height
My Marxist soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Alinsky’s destruction and disgrace!
I hate thee to the level of every day’s
Most riotous need, through surveillance by satellite,
As Black Lives Matter makes you bleed!
I hate thee freely, though men strive for right.
I hate thee with all impurity, as I turn you to demonic Sharia!
I love thee with the sordid passion put to use
In Soros’ old griefs, and with his traitor’s faith.
I hate thee with a hate I pervertedly gained
With communist Frank Marshall Davis. I hate thee with the breath,
Deceptive smiles, tears, in all my strife! And, if Allah choose,
I shall but hate thee better after your death!
